چکیده

[1] The Devils Hole (DH) calcite record from the Great Basin, Nevada, provided the first radiometrically dated time series of late‐Pleistocene climate fluctuations,. In doing so, DH suggested that the penultimate deglaciation, Termination II (T‐II), occurred at 142 ± 3 ka, which is ∼10 kyr before the associated rise in summer insolation, helping to launch the “causality problem” for Milankovitch. The interpretation of the DH record has been subject to considerable discussion ever since. We present the first attempt to reproduce the DH record of an early T‐II in the Great Basin based on a stalagmite from Lehman Caves, Nevada, which is ∼400 km northeast of Devils Hole. Our speleothem records at least the latter part of T‐II over its period of growth from ∼133–129 ka, which appears to disagree with the early timing of T‐II in DH. DH also exhibits important differences from many other paleoclimate records over the past two deglaciations, though these are reduced somewhat after ice‐volume correcting DH dO. We suggest that the climatic signal in the DH record remains to be fully explained. Citation: Shakun, J. D., S. J. Burns, P. U. Clark, H. Cheng, and R. L. Great Basin hydrology, paleoclimate, and connections with the North Atlantic: A speleothem stable isotope and trace element record from Lehman Caves, NV

We present a record of speleothem stable isotope (d18O, d13C) and trace element (Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca) variations from Lehman Caves, Nevada for an interval of time (139e128 ka) that encompasses the penultimate glacial termination, Termination II (T-II). Additional growth phases provide data from about 123 ka, a time that correlates with Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5e, and about 84 ka and between 82 and ...

The cause of the glacial cycles remains a mystery. The origin is widely accepted to be astronomical since paleoclimatic archives contain strong spectral components that match the frequencies of Earth's orbital modulation. Milankovitch insolation theory contains similar frequencies and has become established as the standard model of the glacial cycles. However, high precision paleoclimatic data ...

Modeling speleothem d 13 C variability in a central Sierra Nevada cave using 14 C and 87 Sr / 86 Sr

Carbon isotopes in speleothems can vary in response to a number of complex processes active in cave systems that are both directly and indirectly related to climate. Progressing downward from the soil zone overlying the cave, these processes include soil respiration, fluid–rock interaction in the host limestone, degassing of CO2 and precipitation of calcite upflow from the speleothem drip site,...

A stalagmite record of changes in atmospheric circulation and soil processes in the Brazilian subtropics during the Late Pleistocene

We present a high-resolution, 116,000-year carbon stable isotope record from a stalagmite from southern Brazil, which has been precisely dated using the U-series method. Evaluation of carbon and oxygen isotope ratios together with the speleothem growth history suggest that the carbon isotopic composition of the speleothem is primarily controlled by biogenic CO2 supply from the soil, which is in...

Consequences of pacing the Pleistocene 100 kyr ice ages by nonlinear phase locking to Milankovitch forcing

[1] The consequences of the hypothesis that Milankovitch forcing affects the phase (e.g., termination times) of the 100 kyr glacial cycles via a mechanism known as ‘‘nonlinear phase locking’’ are examined. Phase locking provides a mechanism by which Milankovitch forcing can act as the ‘‘pacemaker’’ of the glacial cycles. Nonlinear phase locking can determine the timing of the major deglaciation...
